Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about LubriSyn hu

What is LubriSyn hu made from?

The purified hyaluronan in LubriSyn CA is extracted from a microbial source. Other oral hyaluronan (HA) products are made from things such as rooster combs or chicken cartilage. The microbial biofermentation results in a high molecular weight HA, and keeps it free from proteins, dermatan, chondroitin sulfate and other glycosaminoglycan contamination that may be found in other HA products.

How is LubriSyn hu administered?

LubriSyn CA is administered orally.

Is there proof that it gets into the joint?

High molecular weight HA like the HA in LubriSyn CA has been demonstrated in the joints of dogs and rats as early as 30 minutes after oral administration. The level peaks in most tissues in 4-6 hours. (Schauss, Balogh, Polyak, Kiraly, & Janok, 2004)

Is LubriSyn hu like Cosequin®?

No. LubriSyn hu is beneficial to the joint fluid. Cosequin is composed primarily of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate and works on cartilage. (NutraMax Laboratories, Inc. 2005) LubriSyn CA and Cosequin can work synergistically to improve joint health.

How much should I give?

The recommended daily oral dose is 1 tablespoon per day for 7 days and then reduce the dose to 2 teaspoons per day.

What does LubriSyn hu taste and smell like?

LubriSyn hu is odorless and has a pleasant raspberry taste.

Can I give too much?

Our safety studies have shown that even at five times the recommended dose for 60 days, there were no adverse effects.

How long will it be before I see results?

There is no exact time. Most people respond by seven to 14 days. Results vary depending upon the condition of the joints.

Will LubriSyn hu go bad?

We suggest using the freshest product possible, but if handled properly it will last 12 months. LubriSyn CA is a sensitive product and can deteriorate. We have added a minimal amount of preservatives to avoid any deterioration. We have also taken steps during production and shipping to ensure its integrity. The production date is printed on the label.

Will extreme temperatures hurt LubriSyn hu?

Yes. As with most liquid nutritional supplements, extreme hot or cold temperatures can cause some breakdown. We recommend storing LubriSyn hu between 40 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (4 to 32 degrees centigrade). DO NOT freeze LubriSyn hu.

Are there any drugs in LubriSyn hu?

No. Hyaluronan is a naturally occurring substance found in the joints, skin and other tissues of all mammals. LubriSyn hu is made from a microbial source of hyaluronan along with a very small amount of sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate as protectants.

Does food affect LubriSyn hu?

LubriSyn hu can be given orally with a meal or between meals. The food should have no effect.

What is the difference between hyaluronan, sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid?

These are three different names for the same compound.

How much should I give?

The recommended daily oral dose for dogs is 1 teaspoon (5 ml) for dogs up to 30 pounds body weight. For dogs between 30 and 60 pounds, we suggest 1 ½ teaspoons daily. For dogs between 60 and 100 pounds, 2 teaspoons. The amount may be doubled for hard-working dogs.

What does LubriSyn CA taste and smell like?

LubriSyn CA is basically odorless and tasteless. Since LubriSyn CA contains sodium hyaluronate, it might have a very slight salty taste to some very sensitive palates.

Can I give too much?

Our safety studies have shown that even at five times the recommended dose for 60 days, there were no adverse effects.

How long will it be before I see results?

There is no exact time. Most animals respond by seven to 14 days. Results vary depending upon the condition of the joints.

Will my animal eat it?

We know of no problems with acceptance of LubriSyn CA. It is odorless and basically tasteless; some very sensitive palates may detect a slight salty taste.

Will extreme temperatures hurt LubriSyn CA?

Yes. As with most liquid nutritional supplements, extreme hot or cold temperatures can cause some breakdown. We recommend storing LubriSyn CA between 40 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (4 to 32 degrees centigrade). DO NOT freeze LubriSyn CA.

Frequently Asked Questions about LubriSyn™ for Horses

What is LubriSyn?

LubriSyn is an oral form of hyaluronic acid (HA) administered daily to maintain consistent levels in the body. LubriSyn can help maintain healthy joints by improving the quality of synovial fluid, the liquid that surrounds the horse’s joints and helps cartilage function.

What is LubriSyn made from?

Unlike other hyaluronic acid (HA) products made from things such as rooster combs, LubriSyn is extracted from a microbial source. This method keeps it free from dermatan, chondroitin sulfate and other glycosaminoglycan contamination that may be found in other HA products.

How is LubriSyn administered?

LubriSyn is the only patented oral form of HA. It has been proven that HA needs to be in a liquid state in order to have the highest absorption levels in the body.

What are Adequan® and Legend®?

Both products are drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat arthritis or joint inflammation and are administered by injection. Legend is hyaluronic acid formulated for intravenous or intramuscular use. Adequan is polysulfated chondroitin sulfate also formulated for intramuscular use. Both products result in a rise in blood concentration after administration followed by a return to baseline levels within several hours unless the drug is re-administered (Popot et al., 2004)

Is LubriSyn like Cosequin®?

No. Cosequin is mainly made up of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. Cosequin works on the cartilage while LubriSyn is more beneficial to the joint fluid. These two products can work synergistically to improve the joint integrity.

How much should I give?

Both the pints and the quarts have a measuring reservoir that is marked in milliliters and ounces. We recommend that you start with a “loading” dose for three to four days of 30 ml or 1 oz. Then you can drop it to the “maintenance” dose of 15 ml or 1/2 oz. These measurements can vary slightly from animal to animal. The gallon size comes with a pump that can be placed directly in the container. Each “squirt” is a measured 15 ml dose. The other option for the gallon is the dosing gun. It also fits right on the gallon and administers a measured dose directly into the animal’s mouth.

How can LubriSyn benefit my animal?

LubriSyn allows the joints to maintain health by quickly increasing mobility and joint stability. This translates into an increase in performance in the animal.

What does LubriSyn taste and smell like?

LubriSyn is basically an odorless and tasteless product. Since LubriSyn is a sodium-based product, some people say that it does have a slightly salty taste.

Can I give too much?

How long before I will see results?

There is no exact time. Most animals observed have improved noticeably within seven to 14 days. Results vary depending on severity of the joint health problems and the dose of LubriSyn.

Will my animal object to LubriSyn administration?

So far we know of no problems with animals accepting LubriSyn. Many people just administer with grain. Others feel more comfortable using the dosing gun placed directly in the animal’s mouth.

Will LubriSyn go bad?

This product may break down if contaminated by bacteria. We have added a minimal amount of preservatives to try to avoid any deterioration of the product. We have also taken steps through our administering methods (i.e., the squeeze-filled reservoir on the pints and quarts, and the pump and dosing gun for the gallons) to ensure its integrity. These methods were chosen to try to keep the unused portion of the product in as clean an environment as possible.

Will extreme temperatures hurt LubriSyn?

Yes. As with most liquid nutritional supplements, extreme hot or cold temperatures can cause some breakdown. We recommend storing LubriSyn in the range between 40 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. DO NOT freeze LubriSyn.

Will LubriSyn create a test positive?

No. HA is something found in the body naturally and it will not show up in a post-competition test. However, if competing under “zero supplement” regulations (e.g., FEI), the horse will not suffer any ill effects of LubriSyn withdrawal during the few days of competition
